This is a bargain quality Stingray specimen called Heliobatis radians , and one of only two species of ray from the Green River Formation. This stingray is not complete and has had about 50% restoration but is a fantastic display piece at a bargain price.
Rays belong to the Chondrichtyes, as do the sharks. All have an inner skeleton made of cartilage. Since cartilage comprises more organic material (collagen and elastic tissues) than bone, it decays more rapidly. As a result, fossils of cartilaginous fishes generally are rare. The cartilaginous fishes appeared in Silurian time, and their ancestors remain one of the most successful groups of marine animals. This ray has only a section of its tail and large repairs to its raylike skeleton. It is a fun display piece at a great price..
