Our Einiosaur skull is roughly 75-80% complete, a very complete skull given the rarity of these fossils. It is a young adult and an amazing piece of Cretaceous history. The skull is the perfect size for display in any location. It measures 30.5" long and 15" wide.
Einiosaurus serves as a crucial link in our understanding of dinosaur evolution. Its transitional horn shape provides insight into how ceratopsian headgear evolved over millions of years, proving that nature's designs are often as creative as they are functional. For visitors to places like the Fossil Shack, Einiosaurus remains a premier example of the incredible diversity that once flourished in the American West.
In the rugged landscapes of northwestern Montana, the echoes of the Late Cretaceous period still resonate through the fossil record. Among the most striking inhabitants of this ancient world was Einiosaurus, a medium-sized centrosaurine dinosaur that roamed the earth approximately 74 million years ago.
The name Einiosaurus carries a deep connection to the land where it was discovered. It is a linguistic hybrid, combining the Blackfeet Indian word eini (meaning "bison") with the Latinized Ancient Greek sauros (meaning "lizard"). This name was chosen to honor the region's indigenous heritage and to reflect the animal's likely role as a herd-dwelling herbivore, much like the modern buffalo.
Its specific name, procurvicornis, vividly describes its most famous physical trait. Derived from Latin, it translates literally to "with a forward-curving horn," highlighting the unique, hook-like ornament that distinguishes it from its ceratopsian cousins.
